Fashion: How to wear swimwear with confidence

IT’S that time again. While it’s hard to beat soaking up the sunshine alongside the pool over summer, there’s one step on the way that few women relish.

Shopping for swimwear doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are some tips for finding “the one.”

Start by maximising the time between trips by investing in a classic colour palette.

Navy pops poolside when paired with white or coral, while a block-coloured one-piece will never go out of fashion.

“It’s always really nice to have a statement one-piece when it comes to swimwear,” David Jones ambassador Jesinta Franklin says. While there’s no substitute for braving that change room and getting to know what suits you, there are some figure-flattering shortcuts. If you’re a pear shape (curvy at the hips and smaller on top), go for separates that will balance your proportions, or an attention-stealing plunging neckline.

Retro-styled high waists are great tummy concealers, or look for shirred or gathered fabrics that create definition at the waist.

Prints, ruffles and embellishments can create curves in an athletic figure. Tie-side bikini bottoms and one-pieces with well-placed cut-outs will also do the trick.

“It’s all about the fit. You want to feel supported and comfortable – for example, I like a good bralette on top,” Jesinta says.

“Don’t be afraid to try different things on and see what works for you … and take a friend.”
